I don’t want someone to control my mind! Will I quack like a duck? Will I wake up? So many questions.
Hypnosis has a long history beginning in 1790 with Franz Mesmer to becoming a recognized profession of standing in Canada and the United States. Despite this fact, many misconceptions abound, thanks in part to the dramatic licence taken in movies, television and books. As a result many people have questions, or concerns when considering seeing a clinical hypnotist.
Going to sleep or losing consciousness: You won’t. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused concentration that we are in and out of many times during the day. In hypnosis you are aware of what is happening around you, you can choose what to pay attention to, it’s like being lost in a really good book.
Mind Control: A hypnotized person is always in control and always has a choice to accept or reject the suggestions given. Hypnosis isn’t a clash of wills, it’s a condition of trust between the hypnotist and you. You must be willing as the hypnotist can’t make you do anything against your will.
Barking like a dog and other antics: Hypnosis for entertainment is entirely different from clinical hypnosis. In that participants in stage shows, choose to get up on stage to have fun and entertain and choose to follow the suggestions given. In clinical hypnosis, the altered state of mind is directed to achieve the positive changes you want in your life.
Hypnotized into criminal acts: You will not do something in hypnosis that goes against your morals or values, if a suggestion is given to that effect it will simply be ignored or rejected.
Deep dark secrets: Your secrets are safe with me and not only because all sessions are completely private, also because hypnosis isn’t like a truth serum. In hypnosis if you don’t want to share some particular information, you won’t.
Non Hypnotizable: Almost everyone can be hypnotized, as a hypnotist I simply facilitate this natural state. It is your choice to accept or reject suggestions at any time. You have more control over your mind in a hypnotic trance, than you do out of trance. It has been found it’s virtually impossible to hypnotize people with an IQ lower than 70 only because they lack the ability to focus their attention long enough to alter their state of mind.
As a clinical hypnotist I work with people with a wide range of concerns:
- Weight loss
- Smoking cessation
- Reduce stress
- Eliminate fears
- Gain self confidence
- Facilitate healing
- Nail biting
- Bruxism
- And more, so much more
